Valve has announced that they will be rolling out yet another free update to the free-to-play first person shooter, Team Fortress 2. In case you’ve been living under a rock, this is the deal with TF2 – the game was originally released in 2007 as part of the original Orange Box, which also included titles like Half-Life 2 and the first Portal game. Since then, TF2 has gone free-to-play, presumably completely supported by the item shop which sells in-game items for real cash. So, five years after its original release, this free game is still pumping out massive content.
The new Mann vs. Machine update introduces a brand new co-op game mode. It sounds like it plays out a little bit like Left4Dead – you and five friends have to fight off wave after wave of the Machine horde with time in between to upgrade gear. After watching to teaser video, it is unclear if Red will be working with Blu to fight the machine, but Valve should be rolling out more info as the update approaches.
TF2 takes some flack sometimes, often humorously referred to as a hat simulator due to the massive amount of decorative hats for your character available through both random drops and the in-game store. Say what you will about hats and micro-transactions, but I have nothing bad to say about this update and I don’t even have all the details yet. I am going to out myself as a Valve fangirl here, but how can I not love a company who continues to release free content for a game this old. Don’t get me wrong, I am not naive and do realize that Valve must be making money on this game, but in an industry that so often tries to squeeze every nickel and dime out of its customer’s its nice to see the Valve is still giving out content to people who either won’t or can’t shell out the additional cash.
If you have not yet played TF2, I encourage you to download it immediately and give it a try. And if you are feeling up to it drop me your steam name and we can kill some machine horde together.
