Issue 1 – 8/15/2012

Sadly, the column will end with nothing impressive. Issue 1 is not what I had hoped it would be and thus I will either be doing Vin’s Picks or a graphic novel/trade review each week. This week was nice and light honestly.

Before Watchmen: Rorschach – I had given up on these a while ago and this book reminded why. While these aren’t bad book, there are other books doing the same thing but better. This story is set in the dirty 1970s of New York, which is a neat setting. The problem with this book for me is the art, which is well done but I find that the realistic style isn’t the best for storytelling. Also, this is Rorschach, there could have been some really inventive art-styles going on but alas, Before Watchmen is really playing it too safe.

The Victories – This book looks like Batman has a scarf. Also this book is playing it safe. I like the indie publishers and the different things that people do but this book feels too much like Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns. We’ve got a gritty city with super-heroes and the citizens have different reactions. This kind of thing has been done. Honestly every super-hero thing has been done but reading this at the same time as Before Watchmen really hammers home that there isn’t a great super-hero book out there, there are good ones but nothing great.

DC Universe Presents: Kid Flash – With Zero Month coming next month this book didn’t want to start a new story but it could have a one shot. Sadly, this isn’t really a one shot in my book. This is more a way to get another part of a story told. This ties-in with Teen Titans (which I don’t read). Admittedly, it doesn’t assume you know what’s going on so you can follow it and it still and enjoyable book. It’s a fun little action piece with some vague proto-romance.
