A Response to Heavy Hitting Internet Sites’ Blackout

Posted on 20 January 2012 by DM

While All Geeks Considered as an entity does its best to hold to a non-political standard in favor of providing you with information and commentary on the various things people geek out about, there are times when this is not possible or appropriate.  On January 18, 2012, as of 12:01 AM we along with many other large and small entities “went black” in order to protest the SOPA and PIPA bills that are being considered by the United States of America’s Congress.

Among the larger Internet entities, Wikipedia, Google, Mozilla, Twitpic, Reddit, Craigslist, the Cheeseburger Network, and WordPress participated in this protest, their actions ranging from making their position clear on the site’s banner to shutting down services and redirecting traffic to petitions and places of information about the bills.

We cannot go into sufficiently detailed information here to describe in detail what changes these bills would make to current U.S. law but we will provide you with links to find this information yourselves. In Google’s words, “These bills would censor the Internet and slow economic growth in the U.S.” Considering that, we encourage you to follow the provided links and look into how this may effect you and how you utilize the Internet.

It’s a pity these bills were only postponed, not shelved. The war is not won yet
