Vin’s Picks: Week of June 11

Posted on 14 June 2012 by VinnieAve

If you are a long time reader of All Geeks Considered you know that we try to have a weekly comics article. When I say try I mean every few months either Diego or I try to do a run down of what we liked this week. I’m trying again. I want to do this every Wednesday night. Let’s see where this goes.

Batman #10: Twitter lost its shit over this one. It was good and there is a major twist. I think that this will have a major effect on the Bat-family but that hasn’t happened yet, I want to see what they do with it over the next few months.

Before Watchmen: Silk Spectre 1 of 4: Last week we had Minutemen and I thought that was terrible, this week we have Silk Spectre which is by no means great or visionary but there are some things that I liked about this, first is the great cover by Amanda Conner and Paul Mounts. This was the high point of the book for me (and the one thing that I really liked this week). We get some good moments of what it feels like to be a teenage girl and it makes us realize that this is not just a superhero book but actually about Laurie.

Avengers vs. X-Men: VS: 3 of 6: This book continues to be one of the dumbest books put out but I enjoy it each time. Personally the fights are fun to read and while there is really no character development or story development it can be really fun to see two character just duke it out. This is not for anyone but the nerdiest of comic book readers.

Conan the Barbarian #5: The Argos Deception Part 2: We actually get to see a part of the deception this week. Sadly this is hard to suggest since it is the second part of a three part story. It’s a pretty standard set-up to a Conan finale. I will be back for sure in 2 months hopefully telling you to pick up Conan the Barbarian #7 which will be part of a new story.

Avengers Vs. X-men: Civil War Part Deux?

Posted on 01 February 2012 by DM

When first confronted with the idea of yet another Marvel Blockbuster storyline I admit I was unsure of what to say.  Should I comment on the over-saturating by Marvel regarding blockbuster storylines? How about the fact that the strong move towards making the Marvel Universe a “shades of gray” world has left them with overly dark plotlines and characters that are difficult to empathize with on both sides of this Avengers/X-men divide?

So we meet again...again

Without a doubt, this will be an interesting journey.  Marvel has talent on its side in all arenas and they have proven repeatedly that they can put together a good over-arching story.  But is it too much?  How long has it been since the norm was a storyline composed of a single issue or two and not a perfectly fit for trade five issues, let alone the 29+ issues AvX will be composed of? When is enough enough?

The answer is sadder than not because it is quite simple and in my mind completely on the consumer; when we stop buying this stuff.  Until readers show Marvel that major storyline after storyline is undesired through sales decreases, Marvel will keep shoveling them out.  So before you decide to pick up that first issue of AvX in three months, think long and hard about whether it is something you are genuinely interested in.
